Pharmacies and DME: Do You Need Accreditation or Are You Exempt?
Many pharmacies provide DME such as diabetic supplies, nebulizers, and ostomy products. However, not all pharmacies need DMEPOS accreditation—CMS offers an exemption for qualifying pharmacies.
Who Qualifies for a DMEPOS Accreditation Exemption?
According to CMS guidelines, a pharmacy is exempt from accreditation if:
- It has been enrolled in Medicare for at least five years
- It has no final adverse actions in the past five years
- DMEPOS billings make up less than 5% of its total sales (excluding drugs)
Why This Matters for DME Providers
Many independent DME suppliers compete with large pharmacy chains that also supply DMEPOS items. Understanding these exemptions helps:
- Identify exempt pharmacies to differentiate your services
- Partner with pharmacies for referrals and collaboration
- Ensure compliance if your pharmacy also supplies DMEPOS
