What Suppliers Need to Know | CMS Withdraws BOC Approval for DMEPOS Accreditation
Background:
On December 2, 2025, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) officially withdrew its approval of the Board of Certification/Accreditation, International (BOC) as an accreditation organization for suppliers of durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS). This means BOC can no longer perform any accreditation activities for DMEPOS suppliers under Medicare. [cms.gov]
What Changed
- BOC is no longer authorized to:
- Perform reaccreditation activities
- Conduct surveys or provide accreditation for new locations or products
- Execute any other functions as a CMS-approved DMEPOS accreditation organization
- Suppliers currently accredited by BOC:
Must transition to another CMS-approved accrediting organization before their current accreditation expires. Without active accreditation, Medicare billing privileges cannot be maintained. - Suppliers in the process of BOC accreditation:
Must seek accreditation from another CMS-approved organization to enroll in Medicare.
What Has Not Changed
- Choice of Accreditor: Suppliers can choose any CMS-approved accreditor. You are not obligated to follow any partnership announcements made by BOC. Meet with CHAP
- Quality Standards: CMS DMEPOS Quality Standards remain the foundation. All approved accreditors, including CHAP, evaluate suppliers against the same federal requirements.
- Existing Work: Much of what suppliers built under BOC will carry over into the next accreditation cycle. You are not starting over, but positioning your business with a new accreditor for the future.
CHAP offers a clear roadmap for suppliers transitioning from BOC, including:
- BOC-to-CHAP Crosswalk: This tool shows how BOC requirements align with CHAP’s DMEPOS Standards of Excellence and CMS Quality Standards, clarifying what carries forward, what needs adjustment, and what can be removed.
- Streamlined Process: CHAP’s process includes a simplified application, readiness call, practical checklists, and a survey experience focused on partnership and patient care.
- National Reach and Support: CHAP is a CMS-approved DMEPOS accrediting body nationwide, offering training and specialty certifications to strengthen your team’s readiness.
Next Steps for BOC-Accredited Suppliers
- Book a Transition Consultation for clarity on pricing, payment options, timelines, and preparation needs.
- During that call, get a copy of the BOC-to-CHAP Crosswalk to see clearly what changes and what doesn’t.
- One of the most challenging parts of switching accreditors is understanding what will actually change. To make that easier, CHAP created a BOC-to-CHAP Crosswalk that lays out, side by side, how BOC requirements align with CHAP’s DMEPOS Standards of Excellence and the CMS DMEPOS Quality Standards.
- Many foundational elements required under BOC — such as delivery documentation, patient instruction processes, personnel files, infection control, and product safety — map directly to CHAP expectations. You can see instantly what carries forward so you don’t redo work you’ve already completed.
- Where CHAP differs, it tends to enhance clarity, rather than complexity. The Crosswalk identifies areas such as quality improvement tracking, policy structure, or documentation details that may require refinement. Most suppliers find these changes manageable and far less time-consuming than anticipated.
- Because CHAP’s standards are built around CMS requirements — not extras — the Crosswalk helps you identify where your administrative burden actually lightens. Requirements that don’t improve safety, quality, or compliance do not reappear.
- The Crosswalk becomes your transition roadmap. It helps you understand:
- Use CHAP’s DMEPOS readiness tools to align your team quickly.
Official CMS Guidance
- Suppliers must update their Medicare enrollment information within 30 days of obtaining new accreditation by submitting a CMS-855S form (online or by mail).
